BharatGPT Hanooman: All you need to know about the AI model developed by Reliance and 9 IITs across the country |
In collaboration with the BharatGPT ecosystem led by IIT Bombay, Seetha Mahalaxmi Healthcare (SML) has introduced ‘Hanooman,’ a suite of Indic large language models trained across 22 Indian languages. Supported by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries and premier engineering institutions in India, the consortium aims to debut its inaugural ChatGPT-style service, BharatGPT, next month. The BharatGPT ecosystem, spearheaded by IIT Bombay along with seven other IITsreceives backing from the Department of Science and Technology, SML, and Reliance Jio.
Here are the key things you need to know about the model:
What is Hanooman
Hanooman is a series of Indic large language models trained on 22 Indian languages. It was unveiled by Seetha Mahalaxmi Healthcare (SML) in partnership with the IIT Bombay-led BharatGPT ecosystem.
What is the size of these language models
The family of foundational language models ranges up to 40 billion parameters in terms of size. The first four among the series which are 1.5 billion, 7 billion, 13 billion and 40 billion parameters will be released next month and will be open-sourced.
In how many Indian languages can the models currently respond
The models can currently respond in 11 Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Marathi. There is an aspiration to extend the model’s capabilities to all 22 Indian languages.
What is the BharatGPT ecosystem
BharatGPT ecosystem is a research consortium led by IIT Bombay with seven other IITs. It is backed by the Department of Science and Technology, SML and Reliance Jio.
What are the capabilities of Hanooman
Hanooman has multimodal AI capabilities for generating text-to-text, text-to-speech, text-to-video and vice versa content.
What are the applications of Hanooman
SML is in talks with BFSI enterprises, healthcare organizations and mobile app providers to offer model-as-a-service or create specialized models by fine-tuning the Hanooman series.
What are the challenges for building Indian LLMs
One of the major challenges for building Indian LLMs is the sourcing of quality datasets in Indian languages. The first hurdle is to improve the quality of these datasets in Indian languages, whether it is in the form of text, audio or video.
How does Hanooman compare with other language models
Hanooman joins the Indic AI race with other language models such as Ola’s Krutrim, SaravamAI’s OpenHathi and IIT-Madras’s Airavata model.
