William Chappell, Microsoft’s chief technology officer for strategic missions and technology, spearheaded this project. He described it as a challenging endeavor, requiring a complete overhaul of an existing AI supercomputer in Iowa. The team, initially elements of the approach in 2022, persevered and successfully delivered the isolated system. “This is the first time we’ve ever had an isolated version – when isolated means it’s not connected to the internet – and it’s on a special network that’s only accessible by the US government,” Chappell told Bloomberg News ahead of an official announcement.
The deployed GPT-4 model can access and analyze files, but it’s intentionally static. This means it cannot learn from the data processes or from the internet. This design choice prevents sensitive information from being inadvertently incorporated into the platform.
The service, operational since last Thursday, awaits testing and accreditation by US intelligence agencies. While roughly 10,000 authorized personnel will have access, the system’s isolation ensures classified data remains secure.
